DISTRICT CHAMPS! Late rally gives Eagles win over Ascension Catholic

Three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted St. John past longtime rival Ascension Catholic for a 7-6 win that clinched 8-1A championship.

Talk about a clutch performance! The St. John Eagles baseball team delivered a storybook finish over the weekend, clinching the District 8-1A championship with a dramatic 7-6 victory over longtime rival Ascension Catholic.

The Eagles were down to their final six outs, but they proved that the game is never over until the final out. A three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning completely shifted the momentum, showcasing the resilience and competitive culture first-year head coach Stephen Laurent is building. "Our goal is to be able to go out there and compete and grow every time we step on the field," Laurent said. "What we saw in this game was a team that really wants to compete and grow."

The decisive moment came with the bases loaded in that fateful sixth inning. Landon Daigle was hit by a pitch, allowing Tyler Edwards to trot home with what would become the championship-winning run. Edwards had kept the rally alive with a sharp single to center field, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.

Of course, securing a title often comes down to a strong closer. Relief pitcher Gavin Hebert entered the pressure cooker in the top of the seventh, walking the first batter but then slamming the door shut. He induced two pop-ups before striking out the final Ascension Catholic hitter, sealing the victory and igniting the celebration. This win completes an impressive district title sweep for St. John, adding the baseball championship to the one already won by the softball team.

The game was a back-and-forth battle from the start. After falling behind early, the Eagles answered with a solo home run from center fielder Daniel Braud. They built a 4-1 lead, only to see Ascension Catholic storm back with four runs of their own to take a 5-4 advantage. But in the end, the Eagles' late-game composure under pressure made all the difference, proving that championships are won with heart as much as skill.
