Disc golf is taking center stage in Austin this weekend, as the Disc Golf Pro Tour returns to one of Texas' most challenging courses. Nestled among cedar brush and pecan groves along Walnut Creek, Sprinkle Valley has earned its reputation as a true test of skill—and this weekend, the world's best players will put their game to the test.
The 18-hole course, located on the grounds of Austin Beerworks' brewery on Sprinkle Road, will co-host the tour's second Texas stop of the season. Ranked the sixth-best disc golf course in Texas by UDisc, Sprinkle Valley offers a rugged, technical challenge that stands out in a sport increasingly moving toward manicured layouts. Designed by local legend Mike Olse—a former worlds doubles champion on the Professional Disc Golf Association tour—the course demands precision and nerve from every player who steps onto the tee pad.
The action begins Thursday and Friday with the first two rounds at Sprinkle Valley. Then, the tournament moves to Harvey Penick Golf Course, temporarily converted for disc golf, for the final two rounds Saturday and Sunday. But here's the catch: to stay in contention for Sunday's title, players must first survive the punishing terrain of Sprinkle Valley.
"Disc golf doesn't have many venues that offer everything Sprinkle does in one place," said Zachery Jansen, owner of Mint Discs, which manages the course. "The course takes it to another level. It has technical, wooded tee shots for most of the course that will punish even the best players for being off their line by just a few feet."
And then there's Hole 18. This par-5 has become the stuff of legend—and controversy. Known as arguably the most difficult hole on the entire pro tour, it has drawn criticism from both men's and women's players for its punishing out-of-bounds and sky-high scores. For those more familiar with ball golf, think of ending your round at TPC Sawgrass, but with even more at stake.
"Hole 18 is the signature par 5, now infamously known as the hardest hole in the history of the Disc Golf Pro Tour," Jansen said. "The final shot is an obstructed island green where players have one last chance to prove they belong here."
Whether you're a seasoned disc golfer or new to the sport, this weekend's event is a must-watch. It's a showcase of skill, strategy, and mental toughness—and a reminder of why disc golf continues to capture the hearts of players and fans alike. So grab your favorite discs, rally your friends, and get ready for a weekend of unforgettable action.
