Nico Iamaleava's first season under center for UCLA didn't exactly go according to plan. But now, with a full year in the Bruins' system under his belt, the former Tennessee transfer is looking to turn things around—and he may have just dropped a major hint about his future.
After UCLA's spring game last weekend, Iamaleava called it his "last spring game," sparking speculation that he's eyeing the 2027 NFL Draft. While he still has two years of eligibility remaining—thanks to a redshirt season in Knoxville—the comment suggests he's already thinking about life beyond college football.
"It was fun. My last spring game. I tried to go out there and enjoy it with the guys," Iamaleava said. "It was good to just play what we've been working on these past few months."
That kind of mindset isn't unusual for a quarterback with his pedigree. Iamaleava was one of the most talked-about players in the transfer portal after his NIL-fueled departure from Tennessee, and he's remained a headline-maker ever since. His 2025 season with the Bruins was a rollercoaster: he started 11 games, completing 208 of 323 passes for 1,928 yards and 13 touchdowns, while also leading the team in rushing with 505 yards and four scores on the ground.
The highlight? A stunning 42-37 upset over No. 7 Penn State at the Rose Bowl, where Iamaleava threw for 166 yards, ran for 130, and accounted for five total touchdowns. It was UCLA's first win over an AP top-10 opponent since 2010—and a moment that reminded everyone why he was such a coveted recruit.
Now, as he prepares for the 2026 season under new head coach Bob Chesney, Iamaleava enters as one of the more experienced quarterbacks in the conference. Whether this truly is his final college campaign or just a passing comment, one thing is clear: he's playing like a man with something to prove—and a potential NFL future to chase.
