The Arizona Diamondbacks have hit a rough patch with veteran first baseman Carlos Santana, who suffered a setback during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno. The 40-year-old infielder, who was on the verge of returning from the injured list, experienced a "twinge" in the same right adductor/groin area that sidelined him last month, according to manager Torey Lovullo.
"We pulled him back and he's in Arizona right now getting reevaluated," Lovullo said, dashing hopes that Santana would rejoin the team during their three-game series against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field, which began Monday, May 11.
Santana has played in only eight games this season, struggling at the plate with just two hits in 24 at-bats (.083) to go along with a double, two walks, and eight strikeouts. The setback is a tough blow for a Diamondbacks squad that was counting on his experience down the stretch.
With Santana's return delayed, Arizona will continue to lean on Ildemaro Vargas and Jose Fernandez at first base. Vargas has been seeing the majority of starts, and the team will need both players to step up as they navigate this latest injury hurdle.
