Diamond Ducks Sunday Recap

Both Diamond teams fall on Sunday

Sunday proved to be a tough day for the Diamond Ducks, as both the softball and baseball teams fell short of completing weekend sweeps on the road. While each squad had already secured series victories heading into the final games, the opportunity to finish strong slipped away against determined opponents.

The softball team entered Sunday with momentum after clinching a series win on Saturday, but UCLA came out hungry to avoid a sweep. The Bruins jumped on the board early, launching a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. They followed it up with another two-run shot in the second, grabbing a quick 4-0 lead.

Oregon head coach Lombardi turned to the bullpen after UCLA's second homer, bringing in Taylour Spencer to replace Elise Sokolsky. However, Spencer struggled to find her rhythm, allowing four of the first five batters she faced to reach base. A costly error from Taryn Ho compounded the issues, and before the Ducks could regroup, the Bruins had blown the game open at 8-0.

But the Ducks showed fight in the top of the third inning. Amari Harper sparked a rally with a clutch RBI single down the left field line, cutting the deficit to 8-1. Stefini Ma'ake followed with the Ducks' NCAA-leading 35th sacrifice fly of the season, making it 8-2. Rylee McCoy kept the momentum going with a sharp single up the middle, scoring another run to bring Oregon within 8-3.

The comeback effort stalled in the fourth inning, though, as UCLA answered with two more home runs to restore an eight-run lead. The Ducks' offense couldn't mount another response in the top of the fifth, and the game ended early via the run rule.

Despite Sunday's result, the softball team has plenty to be proud of. This marked the final regular season series of the year, and thanks to Saturday's series-clinching win, Oregon finished second in the B1G standings. Now the team turns its focus to the B1G tournament, carrying the confidence of a strong regular season into postseason play.
