In a heated exchange that has captured the attention of German football fans, DFB Director Andreas Rettig has fired back at Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeneß over his recent criticism of national team coach Julian Nagelsmann.
The controversy began when Hoeneß suggested that Nagelsmann faces an uphill battle to achieve success at the 2026 World Cup—a bold statement that didn't sit well with the German Football Association's leadership.
Rettig didn't mince words in his response, telling Kicker.de: "I don't recall anyone from the DFB asking Mr. Hoeneß to issue an interim report for Mr. Nagelsmann." He went on to question the timing and motivation behind Hoeneß's remarks, adding, "I also don't know his motivation and what's driving him to say that now."
Defending his coach, Rettig pointed out the challenges Nagelsmann has faced, including a significant injury crisis that has plagued the squad. "We always had at least eight, at times up to ten injured players. That could simply not be blamed on the coach," he explained, emphasizing that the team's struggles aren't a reflection of Nagelsmann's ability.
Perhaps the most pointed jab came when Rettig reminded everyone of Bayern Munich's own history with the 37-year-old tactician. "Uli Hoeneß's Bayern paid €25 million for Julian Nagelsmann, and would gladly have brought him back after his dismissal. There must be a reason for that," he said, clearly irked by the criticism from someone whose club once valued Nagelsmann so highly.
As the dust settles on this latest exchange, one thing is clear: the pressure is mounting on Nagelsmann to deliver results, but he has a powerful ally in the DFB's corner. For now, the focus shifts back to the pitch, where Germany will look to build momentum ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
