The New Jersey Devils have turned to a familiar face to lead their front office, hiring Sunny Mehta as the sixth General Manager in franchise history. For Mehta, a 48-year-old native of Wyckoff, this appointment is a true homecoming.
Mehta's hockey roots run deep in North Jersey, having played varsity hockey for Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes. His professional journey began right here with the Devils from 2014 to 2018, where he cut his teeth under legendary executive Lou Lamoriello. He then spent six influential seasons with the Florida Panthers, rising to Assistant General Manager and playing a pivotal role in building their back-to-back Stanley Cup championship teams in 2024 and 2025.
"This is a dream come true for a New Jersey kid who grew up watching Devils’ practices," Mehta said, highlighting the personal significance of the role. His proven track record in Florida, where he was part of a management group that constructed a modern dynasty, brings immediate credibility to a Devils organization hungry to return to contention.
Devils Managing Partner David Blitzer emphasized the strategic nature of the hire, stating, "Sunny’s familiarity with our organization and his experience with a two-time Stanley Cup-winning team are the foundation for future success. Our expectation is to be a perennial playoff team that competes for the Cup."
A pioneer in the analytics movement, Mehta was instrumental in establishing the NHL's first full-time analytics department with the Devils in 2014. He now returns to New Jersey armed with a championship pedigree and a deep understanding of the modern game, tasked with guiding a promising young core—including stars like Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier—toward the ultimate goal: bringing the Stanley Cup back to the Garden State.
