Big moves are brewing in New Jersey. The Devils have officially kicked off a new era under General Manager Sunny Mehta, and their first major front-office addition signals a clear championship mindset.

Mehta announced Monday that Braden Birch is joining the organization as an assistant general manager—the first hire since Mehta took the reins as head of hockey operations last month. For Devils fans looking for a reason to believe, this one checks all the boxes.

Birch isn't just a familiar face to Mehta; he's a proven winner. The two worked side by side with the Florida Panthers, helping build the powerhouse that captured back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2024 and 2025. That kind of pedigree doesn't come cheap, and in the competitive landscape of the NHL, it's exactly the kind of experience that can transform a franchise.

"His blend of on-ice experience, management background, and intellect will serve him well in his new role," Mehta said. "Braden will work to bolster all areas of our operation, and I look forward to him joining our existing front office, where his personality and work ethic will fit in excellently."

Birch spent over a decade with the Panthers, most recently overseeing salary cap management as director of hockey operations. That expertise in navigating the financial side of building a roster is invaluable—especially for a Devils team looking to retool and rise in the Eastern Conference standings.

The hire comes as part of a larger shakeup. As expected, the Devils did not renew the contracts of executives Dan MacKinnon and Chuck Fletcher, both of whom reported to longtime GM Tom Fitzgerald before his departure in early April. Mehta is clearly putting his own stamp on the organization, and Birch is the first brick in that new foundation.

For Birch, the move is a homecoming of sorts—professionally speaking. "I am really excited to take this next step in my professional career," said Birch, who turns 37 just before the NHL season begins in late September. "I want to thank Bill Zito, the Viola family, and the entire Florida Panthers organization for 12 amazing years, and the ability to help a front office achieve the ultimate goal of Stanley Cup championships."

He added, "I also greatly appreciate them giving me the opportunity to grow my professional career in New Jersey. I look forward to working with Sunny and his group on returning the Devils to the levels of success that we believe they can achieve."

Panthers GM Bill Zito echoed the sentiment, calling Birch a "great person" who will be missed but deserves the chance to advance. "When you have success like we had the past few seasons, individuals are going to get opportunities to advance and it's only a good thing for everyone," Zito said.

For Devils fans, the message is clear: the front office is being built with championship DNA. And if you're looking to rep the new-look Devils in style, keep an eye out—this team is dressing for success, on and off the ice.
