In a heartbreaking turn of events, Italy and Inter Milan legend Alessandro Altobelli has been left "devastated" after being forced to miss the funeral of his best friend, former Inter midfielder Evaristo Beccalossi. The 1982 World Cup winner is currently stranded in Kuwait, with no flights available to bring him back to Italy in time for the service.
Beccalossi, who passed away on May 6 at the age of 69, was being laid to rest today in his hometown of Brescia. The funeral drew a host of Nerazzurri greats, including Beppe Bergomi, but one of Beccalossi's closest friends was conspicuously absent.
Altobelli, who has lived in Kuwait for years while working as a Serie A pundit for local television, explained the agonizing situation. "There are no flights. It had already taken me two days to return here [to Kuwait]. I spent eight hours in Istanbul during a layover, trying to rest on a chair. Now I'm stranded, and there are no solutions," he said, his words heavy with emotion.
The bond between the two footballing icons ran deep, forged during their time together at Inter Milan in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They were teammates when the Nerazzurri clinched the 1979-80 Serie A title—a triumph that cemented their place in club history. Altobelli, who remains Inter's second-highest all-time scorer with 209 goals, spoke of Beccalossi not just as a teammate but as family.
"He was my best friend. He was a champion and a second father to my sons. With him, a part of me has died too," Altobelli concluded, his words a poignant reminder of the deep personal connections that transcend the beautiful game.
For fans of Italian football, this story is a stark reminder of the human side of the sport—where even the greatest heroes can be left powerless by circumstances beyond their control.
