Mother Nature had other plans for Monday night's series opener between the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox at Comerica Park. What started as a proactive move—pushing first pitch up 30 minutes to 6:10 p.m. to dodge incoming storms—turned into a suspended affair when the skies opened up in the eighth inning.
With the tarp rolled onto the field at 8:15 p.m., the game entered a rain delay with the Tigers trailing 5-2. The Red Sox had just broken the game open with a five-run top of the seventh, turning what had been a tight pitchers' duel into a lopsided scoreline.
The delay added another chapter to what's been a challenging stretch for Detroit's pitching staff. Left-hander Tarik Skubal, originally slated to start Monday's game, was scratched after landing on the injured list with loose bodies in his elbow, requiring surgery. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch struck an optimistic tone about the setback, saying, "We're not canceling the season."
In Skubal's absence, the Tigers turned to a bullpen game. Left-hander Tyler Holton handled the first inning before giving way to right-hander Ty Madden, fresh off a call-up from Triple-A Toledo. Madden was brilliant, tossing five scoreless innings as a bulk reliever and keeping the Tigers in contention. But the wheels came off in the seventh when right-hander Ricky Vanasco and left-hander Enmanuel De Jesus combined to allow five runs, handing Boston the lead.
As the rain continues to fall, fans at Comerica Park—and those watching from home—are left waiting for word on when play will resume. For now, the Tigers will look to regroup and find a way to claw back into the game once the weather cooperates.
