The Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox found themselves in a familiar battle against an unpredictable opponent on Monday night—Mother Nature. The series opener at Comerica Park was halted by a rain delay in the top of the eighth inning, forcing players and fans to wait out the inclement weather.
In a bold move to dodge the forecasted storms, the game had actually started 30 minutes early, at 6:10 p.m. But despite the best efforts, the rain arrived anyway. The grounds crew rolled out the tarp at 8:15 p.m., putting the game on pause with the Tigers trailing 5-2.
The game took an unexpected turn earlier when left-hander Tarik Skubal, originally slated to start, was placed on the injured list due to loose bodies in his left elbow, requiring surgery. In his absence, the Tigers turned to a bullpen-by-committee approach. Right-hander Ty Madden, fresh from Triple-A Toledo, stepped up as a bulk reliever and delivered five scoreless innings. Left-hander Tyler Holton handled the first inning, setting the stage for Madden's impressive outing.
Unfortunately, the seventh inning unraveled quickly. Right-handed reliever Ricky Vanasco and left-handed reliever Enmanuel De Jesus struggled, allowing five runs that put Boston ahead. At the time of the delay, the Tigers were looking to regroup and mount a comeback.
For fans at Comerica Park, the wait continues. As the tarp covers the field, both teams are left hoping for a window in the weather to resume what has been a game of shifting momentum and unexpected turns.
