Sebastian Cossa has to be on the Detroit Red Wings roster next season, and this week was a chance to get him a couple starts in the NHL.

The Detroit Red Wings' season finale presented a unique opportunity. With playoff hopes extinguished, the team opted to give 2024 first-round pick Michael Brandsegg-Nygård a taste of the NHL this week. This move, however, has spotlighted a lingering question for the franchise: what about Sebastian Cossa?

The highly-touted goaltender, a first-round selection in 2021, is at a pivotal career juncture. His waiver-exempt status is expiring, meaning he must be on the NHL roster next season or risk being claimed by another team. Yet, as the Wings' season wound down, the call to bring Cossa up for a start or two never came, leaving him with just a single game of NHL experience.

Coach Todd McLellan was clear about the decision, stating there was "no thought" of recalling Cossa from the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins. The reasoning lies in Grand Rapids' own successful campaign. The Griffins have clinched a playoff spot and boast a deep goaltending trio of Cossa, recent signee Trey Augustine—the 2024 Mike Richter Award winner—and Michal Postava. The organization prioritized their AHL affiliate's championship push, wanting all three netminders focused on the task at hand.

While this protects the Griffins' postseason ambitions, it leaves the Red Wings' future in net with a significant unknown. Cossa's development has been closely watched, and his transition to the NHL is one of the team's most critical storylines. As the Wings look ahead to a crucial offseason, ensuring their potential franchise goaltender is ready for the bright lights of Little Caesars Arena will be paramount. The decision to keep him in Grand Rapids this week may have been about the present, but all eyes will be on Cossa's future when the puck drops next fall.
