The playoff picture is finally clear in the Eastern Conference, and the top-seeded Detroit Pistons now know their first-round foe. After securing the No. 8 seed with a decisive play-in tournament victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Friday, the Orlando Magic are headed to Detroit to kick off their postseason campaign.
The series begins this Sunday, April 19, at 6:30 p.m. on NBC, with the Pistons enjoying home-court advantage. Detroit enters the playoffs riding high, boasting a formidable 60-22 record—the franchise's third-best mark ever—and having won 15 of their final 19 regular-season games. Their momentum, however, will be tested by a Magic squad they split the season series with, 2-2.
This matchup promises intrigue, as the teams traded wins throughout the year. The Pistons took victories in October and March, while Orlando countered with wins in November (during the NBA Cup) and, most recently, on April 6th. In that final regular-season clash, the Magic won 123-107 against a Pistons lineup missing key players Cade Cunningham and Tobias Harris. Orlando's offseason acquisition, Desmond Bane, has been a particular thorn in Detroit's side, averaging 22.8 points against them, including a 37-point explosion at Little Caesars Arena in November.
As the Pistons and Magic prepare to battle, the other Eastern Conference first-round series is also set. The Philadelphia 76ers, who clinched the No. 7 seed by defeating Orlando in the play-in, will face the second-seeded Boston Celtics.
