Fans outside of Little Caesars Arena were excited for Game 1 of the new Detroit Pistons series.

The energy was electric outside Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday, May 5, as Detroit Pistons fans gathered for Game 1 of the second round of the NBA playoffs—a moment that hasn't happened in nearly 18 years. The atmosphere was a true celebration of basketball and community, with music from a ticketed fan event setting the stage for a night of high-stakes action.

Adding to the excitement, Tigers fans and their four-legged friends were making their way to Comerica Park for a Bark in the Park game against the Red Sox, with first pitch scheduled just 20 minutes before the Pistons tipped off. It was a perfect example of Detroit sports fans showing up in full force, whether for hardwood or baseball diamond.

Among the crowd waiting outside the arena 2.5 hours before game time were lifelong fans Kendra Robinson, 52, and her husband James Robinson, 48, of Detroit. For them, this season has been a long time coming. "We've been waiting for a season like this for years," Kendra said. "This could be the year the team wins the championship." She described feeling "grateful and blessed" to be a Pistons fan, crediting the team's deep friendship, mutual respect, and strong coaching as key factors in their success. She also singled out star player Cade Cunningham, adding, "This is so amazing and exciting that Cade wants to be with us. He could be with any team he wants to, but he wants to be with us to bring us a championship."

Derek Fennicks, 54, arrived just as early, eager to be one of the first fans through the doors. Having attended one playoff game last week, he said tonight's matchup had him even more pumped. "Outstanding," he said of being a Pistons fan right now. "It's good to have a winning team. It looks like a lot of Detroit is coming back—the Red Wings, Tigers, and Lions are winning now. Now the Pistons are winning, so this is a good feeling. It's definitely a good feeling. We haven't had all our teams winning at one time in a long time."

Of course, not everyone in the crowd was wearing Pistons red, white, and blue. Sprinkled among the sea of Detroit faithful, Cavaliers fans could be spotted in white shirts with gold lettering reading "beat Detroit," along with other Cleveland gear. Some fans had traveled from as far as South Carolina to witness the game in person.

Whether you're cheering for the home team or the visitors, one thing is clear: playoff basketball is back in Detroit, and the city is ready to make some noise.
