Detroit, get ready to cheer—the Motor City is officially joining the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) family. The league announced Wednesday that Detroit will welcome a new franchise, set to hit the ice at Little Caesars Arena starting in the 2026-27 season.

While a team name and logo are still under wraps, the franchise's identity is already taking shape. The primary colors will be black and silver, with white as a secondary hue. A touch of red will serve as an accent color, paying homage to Detroit's storied sports legacy—especially the Red Wings' century-long reign as Hockeytown's pride and the city's deep-rooted hockey culture. According to the PWHL's release, "The palette is distinct from any other team in the league, with the primary colors intended to evoke Detroit’s innovative and industrial spirit, matched with the resilient identity of Metro Detroiters."

Ally Financial has stepped up as the team's inaugural partner, with the brand's logo set to appear on the chest of Detroit's jerseys. This partnership underscores the growing commercial momentum behind women's hockey, as the league continues to expand its footprint.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer couldn't hide her excitement, stating, "Detroit sports fans are the best in the world. From selling out arenas to setting attendance records, our fans show out when women’s hockey shows up. Michiganders have already brought so much talent to the PWHL and U.S. Olympic Team, and we’re ready to build on Michigan’s hockey momentum. Having our own PWHL team in Detroit will inspire even more young girls and women who play hockey in arenas and backyards across our state to follow their dreams right here in Michigan."

Detroit's arrival in the PWHL has been brewing for a while. The league tested the waters with four "Takeover Tour" games at Little Caesars Arena over the past three seasons, drawing an average crowd of nearly 13,400 fans. A standout moment came when roughly 16,000 spectators packed the arena to watch the Montreal Victoire edge out New York, proving the city's hunger for professional women's hockey.

But the excitement doesn't stop there. Detroit will also host the 2026 PWHL Awards Ceremony on June 16, followed by the 2026 PWHL Draft on June 17 at the iconic Fox Theatre. Both events are expected to be ticketed and open to fans, offering a front-row seat to the league's brightest stars and rising talent.

For fans in Detroit, this is more than just an expansion—it's a celebration of hockey's past, present, and future in a city that lives and breathes the game. Keep your eyes peeled for that team name and jersey reveal; the Motor City's newest squad is ready to make its mark.
