The Detroit Lions are entering the 2026 NFL Draft with a clear identity and a mission to fortify their roster. Following the departure of Pro Bowl left tackle Taylor Decker, reinforcing the offensive line is an obvious priority—a move head coach Dan Campbell would undoubtedly champion, even if GM Brad Holmes plays his cards close to the vest.

However, the trenches aren't the only area in need of an upgrade. With a cluster of elite edge-rusher prospects projected to go early, the Lions might feel the pull to move up the board. Securing a dynamic pass-rusher opposite Aidan Hutchinson could transform their defense, creating nightmares for opposing quarterbacks. Of course, Holmes has a history of surprising the league by targeting players, like Jahmyr Gibbs, at positions that didn't seem like immediate needs but represented a clear talent upgrade.

Holmes has been vocal about his aggressive philosophy, recently confirming the Lions would "absolutely" trade up in the first round for the right player. "If we have that kind of conviction for a player, absolutely. We’re going to go and get him," Holmes stated, acknowledging his own reputation for making bold moves.

Executing such a maneuver will require strategic maneuvering. Holding the 17th overall pick and only one other selection in the top 117 (No. 50), the Lions may need to leverage future draft capital from 2027 to climb the board. With nine total picks this year but seven clustered in the later rounds (4-7) and no third-rounder, Holmes will need to be creative to land the impact player that could push this contending team over the top.
