The NFL schedule release date might be getting a delay this year, and Detroit Lions fans will want to keep that in mind before marking their calendars.

According to a report from Pro Football Talk, the league's annual unveiling of the full regular-season slate may not land in its usual mid-May window. For the last five or six years, the NFL has consistently dropped the schedule around the second week of May—often on a Wednesday near May 13. But in 2026, that timeline is looking less certain.

NFL vice president of broadcast planning Mike North recently acknowledged the flexibility in the process. "Most fans know full well that the schedule comes out in mid-May now," North said. "That's what we've done the last five or six years. That's sort of our target. Is there any magic to May 12, 13, 14? No. Is there any real downside to [May] 19, 20 or 21? No."

That statement alone signals a potential shift. Mid-May is still the goal, but the exact week is now up in the air—and that could mean the Lions faithful will have to wait a little longer to see when their team hits the gridiron.

Several factors are complicating the timeline. One of the biggest involves a five-game broadcast package still being negotiated. The league is working through deals that could involve platforms like YouTube, Netflix, and Fox, and those games need to be finalized before the schedule can be locked in. North emphasized how critical these decisions are, saying, "These five games that are out there as a package that are being negotiated right now, love to know when, where those games are going to be played so we can schedule them accordingly."

The NFL Draft is also creating ripple effects. North noted that unexpected developments could force the league to adjust. "Maybe something happens in the draft that surprises us, somebody gets traded a quarterback, a big name something different at the top of the draft and we need an extra couple of days to adjust and react to it," he said.

Even player decisions outside the draft could influence scheduling. A potential return from Aaron Rodgers, for example, could make teams like Pittsburgh far more attractive for primetime slots—potentially shifting the Lions' own matchups and visibility.
