In the NFL, having a top-tier quarterback isn't everything—but having a weak one is almost certainly a fast track to mediocrity. That's a lesson one of the Detroit Lions' fiercest rivals is learning the hard way.
CBS recently ranked the Minnesota Vikings as having the No. 8 worst quarterback room in the league heading into the 2026 season. That might come as a surprise, especially after the Vikings signed two-time Pro Bowler Kyler Murray to a one-year, $1.3 million deal this offseason. But a closer look reveals why the skepticism remains.
Murray's Pro Bowl nods came back in 2020 and 2021—practically a lifetime ago in NFL years. Since 2022, he's missed 30 of a possible 68 games. And in his limited action with the Cardinals in 2025, he posted a career-low 227.0 total yards per game. That kind of inconsistency doesn't inspire confidence, even with a fresh start in Minnesota.
Of course, the Vikings didn't sign Murray just for depth. They needed a lifeline after 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy struggled mightily in his sophomore season. Despite playing under Kevin O'Connell—the 2024 Coach of the Year—and surrounded by a dynamic supporting cast, McCarthy ranked dead last in the NFL in completion percentage (57.6%), touchdown-to-interception ratio (11-12), and passer rating (72.6). It was a stunningly poor performance given the talent around him.
There is some hope, though. Murray is one of just four players in NFL history to rack up 20,000+ passing yards and 30+ rushing touchdowns in his first seven seasons, joining elite company like Josh Allen, Cam Newton, and Lamar Jackson. If he can tap back into that dual-threat magic, the Vikings' quarterback room could look a lot different.
And it's not all doom and gloom for Minnesota's offense. The Vikings just added wide receiver Jauan Jennings to a receiving corps that already features superstar Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison. Throw in tight end T.J. Hockenson—a familiar face for Lions fans—and there's no shortage of weapons.
The pieces are there. The question is whether the Vikings can finally find the right man under center to make them work.
