Detroit getting pro women's hockey team? What we know about the rumors

The PWHL has made tour stops to Detroit four times in the last three years and there's buzz the city could get a full-time team.

Hockeytown might soon have a new team to cheer for—and this one comes with a whole new level of excitement. Rumors are swirling that Detroit could be the next destination for a Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) franchise, and the buzz is louder than a sold-out crowd at Little Caesars Arena.

The speculation gained serious momentum when Denise Ilitch—whose family owns the Detroit Red Wings, Tigers, and Little Caesars Arena—predicted a PWHL team is heading to the Motor City. "I believe we'll be getting a team in Detroit soon, which really excites me," Ilitch said on her podcast back in March. As a University of Michigan Board of Regents member and longtime advocate for women's hockey, her words carry weight.

It's not just local chatter, either. Reports from The New York Times and The Hockey News suggest Detroit is high on the league's expansion list, especially after the PWHL recently added teams in Seattle and Vancouver. The league is eyeing two to four new teams by the 2026-27 season, and Detroit's hockey pedigree makes it a natural fit.

The PWHL has already tested the waters here, making four tour stops in Detroit over the last three years. And the local talent pool is deep: some of the best women's hockey players in the world call Michigan home, including Megan Keller, who became a hero for Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics. With that kind of star power and a city that lives and breathes hockey, the pieces seem to be falling into place.

While nothing is official yet, one thing is clear: the ice is getting warmer for a Detroit PWHL team. Stay tuned—Hockeytown might just be getting a new chapter in its storied history.
