When you think of game-changing plays, the long snapper probably isn't the first position that comes to mind—but for the Denver Broncos, it's a role they're quietly investing in for the future.
The Broncos signed undrafted free agent Luke Basso out of Oregon shortly after the 2026 NFL Draft, adding some much-needed competition to the special teams unit. Basso, who turned heads at the Senior Bowl back in February, fits the team's pattern of targeting players they've scouted in person at that event.
At Oregon, Basso was a model of consistency, serving as the primary long snapper in 39 games and earning First-team All-Big Ten honors twice. Coming out of high school, he was ranked the No. 3 long snapper in the country—so it's clear he's been on the radar for a while.
That said, unseating veteran Mitchell Fraboni won't be easy. Fraboni is entering the second year of a three-year contract and turns 30 this season—still in his prime for a specialist. But Denver made a statement by giving Basso a $7,500 signing bonus and a $20,000 contract guarantee, totaling $27,500 in guaranteed money. That's a solid commitment for an undrafted rookie.
Long snapper is one of those positions you don't think about until something goes wrong—and the Broncos seem to be thinking ahead. With Fraboni's contract winding down, Basso could spend this season on the practice squad, learning the ropes, and be ready to take over full-time as early as 2027.
For now, Fraboni is the guy until he isn't. But in the NFL, the future is always just one snap away.
