For the Dallas Cowboys, a bounce-back season on defense starts with a healthy DeMarvion Overshown—and for the first time in what feels like forever, he's entering an offseason without a rehab schedule.
After missing his entire rookie campaign in 2023 with a torn ACL, Overshown burst onto the scene in 2024, delivering the kind of athletic, sideline-to-sideline play the Cowboys had been craving. In just 13 games, he racked up 90 tackles, five sacks, an interception returned for a touchdown, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. But then came another devastating knee injury, this time involving multiple torn ligaments, which sidelined him for most of last season. He managed to return for five games late in the year, but the real victory was walking away without any lingering issues.
Now, with a full, healthy offseason ahead of him, Overshown is feeling something he hasn't felt in years: optimism.
"Biggest blessing I can ask for," Overshown told reporters Thursday, via Jon Machota of The Athletic. "I feel like everybody knows when I'm healthy, I'm one of the best linebackers in the league. That's not to toot my own horn, but the film and the stats speak for themselves when I'm on the field. Being healthy is the number one way to stay on the field and be able to do what I do."
He's not wrong. When healthy, Overshown has shown the speed, instincts, and playmaking ability that made him a third-round pick out of Texas. His versatility allows him to cover tight ends, blitz off the edge, and flow to the ball carrier with rare quickness. It's the kind of presence that can transform a defense from good to feared.
"The fact that I get to go through this whole offseason as a healthy man, and coming into training camp healthy, I feel like people ain't seen my best yet," Overshown added. "So, I know it's going to be one of my best years."
The Cowboys' defensive struggles last season went beyond just missing Overshown—which is why the front office made a flurry of moves to overhaul that side of the ball this spring. But bringing back a fully healthy Overshown to his 2024 form would be a massive step in the right direction. And for a team looking to reclaim its defensive identity, that's exactly the kind of blessing they need.
