"Pop taught me how to use my teammates to make it easier for me later in the game," DeRozan recalled. "Utilizing them, playing a certain way, breaking down the game, understanding it, sharing the ball—that opened up the game for me super easy."

What DeRozan didn't expect was how Popovich would orchestrate this transformation. "He tricked me," DeRozan admitted with a laugh. "It was a crazy thing." The trick came during his first shootaround with the Spurs. Popovich announced to the team that DeRozan would be playing point guard—a position he had never played in his career.

That decision forced DeRozan to focus on getting everyone else involved first. "It put me in a position of, 'Man, I got to get everybody else going,'" he said. "And it opened up a different type of vision that I didn't know I had."

The strategy paid off beautifully. DeRozan became a playmaker first, setting up his teammates throughout the game. Then, when the fourth quarter arrived, Popovich would give him the green light: "Do what you need to do. Go win the game."
