Deion Sanders isn't one to hold back—and when it comes to his son Shedeur's rookie season with the Cleveland Browns, "Coach Prime" had plenty to say.
On a recent podcast, the Hall of Famer opened up about the challenges Shedeur faced during his first year in the NFL, describing it bluntly as "hell and back." Deion didn't mince words when discussing how the media covered his son, saying, "When he takes off his shirt, I see the scars on his back that he's been through hell, but he's made it through hell."
Shedeur Sanders entered the 2026 season as the third-string quarterback behind Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel. With Gabriel being a higher draft pick, the depth chart made sense early on. But when Flacco was benched, Gabriel took the starting job. It wasn't until Flacco was traded to the Cincinnati Bengals that Sanders moved up to the backup role.
Then came his big break. After a concussion sidelined Gabriel, Shedeur made his first career start against the Las Vegas Raiders—and led the Browns to a victory. He went on to start seven games, posting a 3-4 record while throwing for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and ten interceptions. Not a perfect rookie campaign, but one that showed flashes of promise.
But the drama didn't stop there. Later in the podcast, Deion revealed his intention to meet with new Browns head coach Todd Monken to discuss how to "unlock" his son as a player. Yes, you read that right—an NFL dad requesting a sit-down with the head coach to talk about playing time and development. It's not exactly standard practice in the pros, where these conversations usually stay between coaches and players.
Still, Deion isn't backing down. "I think it's vital that as a coach, not the dad, I can tell him a few things about [Shedeur], how to get him going," he said. "That wasn't asked of me a year ago. I don't understand it. Even a guy like..."
Whether Monken takes that meeting remains to be seen. But one thing's for sure: when Deion Sanders talks, the sports world listens—and the Browns' quarterback room just got a whole lot more interesting.
