Deion Sanders has always been his son's biggest advocate, but even he stayed quiet while Shedeur Sanders endured one of the toughest rookie seasons in recent memory. Now, the Colorado coach and NFL Hall of Famer is breaking his silence, and his words paint a vivid picture of a young quarterback's "hellish" journey through the NFL.

"I see scars on his back," Deion said on Thursday's episode of The Barbershop podcast. The scars aren't physical — they're the marks left by a draft process and rookie campaign that tested Shedeur's resilience at every turn.

What was supposed to be a triumphant entry into the NFL turned into a stunning fall on draft day. Shedeur, once projected as an early-round pick, slid all the way to Day 3 before the Cleveland Browns finally called his name. The reason? A swirl of pre-draft rumors that Deion insists were outright lies.

"It was some ignorant things came out about him pre-draft," Deion said. "Like, he would never go into a meeting with headphones on. He would never go into a meeting unprepared. That's just not who he is."

The whispers followed Shedeur from the NFL Combine through the draft process. One anonymous coach told NFL Media that their formal interview with the young quarterback was "the worst formal interview I've ever been in in my life." Others questioned whether his skill set could translate to the pro game. Shedeur has since acknowledged that much of the scrutiny stemmed from his famous last name, with opinions about his father coloring the narrative.

But the real test came once he hit the field. Thrust into action for seven starts with the Browns, Shedeur found himself learning on the fly in a chaotic system. The rookie season became less about meeting expectations and more about survival — a baptism by fire that left lasting impressions on both father and son.

"A lot of things that was said... it bothered me, but it didn't bother him," Deion admitted. "He just wanted the opportunity to get on the grass and do his thing."

Despite the adversity, the tape tells a different story than the headlines. Shedeur showed live arm talent and pocket poise, the same traits that made him a standout at Colorado. The disconnect between projection and perception, Deion believes, is what cost his son a higher draft slot — not a lack of ability.

Now, with a season of hard lessons behind him, Shedeur has emerged with a new perspective. Deion says his son now understands that last year "wasn't his time" just yet. For a quarterback who has faced doubt at every level and proven his critics wrong, the journey is far from over — and the best may still be ahead.
