For Deion Sanders and Colorado football, the absence of a spring transfer portal window isn't a drawback; in fact, he prefers it this way.

As the college football landscape continues to change, Sanders has been vocal about favoring a more stable offseason calendar, citing player development and roster cohesion as his reasons. With no spring window, spring practices and games are no longer platforms for players to bolster their transfer portal credentials. Teams can focus solely on growth throughout the spring without worrying about losing players following a productive camp.

"You’re already further along," Sanders said after Colorado's spring game. "Because you know what you’ve got, you know what you need to work on, you know the players that need to improve."

The Buffaloes have been prime victims of the spring portal in recent years, with several players, whether freshmen or transfers, leaving the program after spring practices. Now, Colorado can evaluate its roster with more clarity heading into the summer.

"We know what we’ve got to work on," Sanders added. "We know what guys have got to step it up, we know what guys might not be the guys we thought they were, but they still have time to get bigger, stronger, faster and understand the playbook."

Sanders likes where the team is heading into the summer break, following a much more hands-on offseason from the fourth-year head coach. In Boulder, fewer distractions could mean more development—and hopefully, better results following a 3-9 season.
