Detroit Tigers score: Right-hander Jack Flaherty had 10 strikeouts to one walk, but three mistakes from the defense led to four runs for the Red Sox.

In a game that showcased both brilliance and heartbreak, Detroit Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty delivered his strongest outing in weeks—only to see it undone by defensive lapses that handed the Boston Red Sox a 4-0 sweep-clinching victory on Wednesday at Comerica Park.

Flaherty, 30, struck out 10 batters and walked just one across five innings, marking his first double-digit strikeout performance since August 9, 2024. But three defensive miscues behind him turned what could have been a scoreless outing into four runs allowed—only two of which were earned.

"It's frustrating, because Jack pitched his heart out," one observer noted. "He gave the team exactly what they needed, but the defense just couldn't back him up."

The loss dropped the Tigers (18-20) to two games below .500 for the first time since April 12, extending a rough stretch that has seen them lose 10 of their last 16 games. The three-game sweep at the hands of the Red Sox (16-21) stings even more, as Boston entered the series with a losing record of their own.

Making matters tougher, the Tigers played without manager A.J. Hinch, who served a one-game suspension after pitcher Framber Valdez drilled Red Sox infielder Trevor Story the night before. Bench coach George Lombard stepped in to manage the club.

For Flaherty, the outing was a significant step forward after struggling to complete four innings in his previous starts. He threw 96 pitches over five frames, showing the kind of command and swing-and-miss stuff that made him a sought-after arm. But in a game where every run counts, the defensive breakdowns proved too much to overcome.

The Tigers now turn their attention to a critical American League Central showdown with the Kansas City Royals, beginning Friday at 7:40 p.m. on Detroit SportsNet. With the division race heating up, Detroit will need to clean up the mistakes and give their pitchers the support they deserve.
