The defending Class 2A Division I state baseball champion Centerville Tigers have been forced to forfeit the remainder of their season following a UIL eligibility violation, abruptly ending their title defense in stunning fashion.
Centerville, which had advanced to the regional semifinals this weekend, self-reported the infraction after an internal review confirmed the use of an ineligible player. The Tigers' postseason exit opens the door for Shelbyville—the team Centerville defeated in the area round—to re-enter the playoffs and face Harleton in the regional semifinals.
Interim Superintendent Dottie Sullivan revealed on Monday that the district received a notice of allegation from the University Interscholastic League (UIL) regarding a student-athlete's eligibility. "In response, the district immediately began a comprehensive internal review and worked closely with the UIL, the District Executive Committee, and all involved parties throughout a multi-day investigative process," Sullivan stated in a letter to parents.
The district held multiple meetings with players and families, starting with an initial update on Monday, followed by a follow-up session Tuesday, and a final meeting Wednesday after the determination was made. "After carefully reviewing additional information obtained during the investigation, the district determined that a violation of UIL Constitution and Contest Rules had occurred," the letter continued. "In accordance with UIL requirements, Centerville ISD self-reported the matter."
For a program that entered the season as the defending state champions, this marks a heartbreaking and unexpected end to what promised to be a deep playoff run. The Tigers' absence now reshapes the regional bracket, giving Shelbyville a second chance at postseason glory.
