The Sterlington Panthers are proving why they wear the crown. As the defending LHSAA Division III nonselect champions, this powerhouse squad is making a statement this postseason. After a dominant semifinal sweep over No. 4 South Beauregard, top-seeded Sterlington is one step closer to bringing home back-to-back titles.
It was a nail-biter in Game 2. For seven innings, the Knights and Panthers were locked in a pitcher's duel that felt like a championship game itself. But when the game was on the line, Sterlington's veteran stars delivered. Senior Miller Sheets—a Baylor signee and LSWA Mr. Baseball—broke the deadlock with a sacrifice fly. Moments later, fellow senior Tre Burch, a Harding football signee and LSWA Mr. Football, crushed a two-run single to shatter South Beau's no-hitter. The Panthers took the 3-0 victory in nine innings, completing the sweep and punching their ticket back to Sulphur.
"It's a dream come true," Burch said. "I knew we had to work hard to get to this point. (Saturday) was really a test for us, and it just showed us how far we came from the start of the year."
Sheets added, "I didn't care how I got it done. I was going to try and get that winning run in. To be able to get it in, it was pretty special. I'm going to remember that moment for a long time."
This season, Sheets has been on an absolute tear. Through six postseason games, he's batting .500 with two home runs, five doubles, and 13 RBIs—not to mention his highlight-reel plays at shortstop. Alongside him, the Panthers' lineup is deep with talent, including junior Devyn Downs—an LSU commit—who held the Knights to just one hit over seven innings on the mound.
Sterlington (29-5) is chasing history. A second consecutive championship would mark the second time the program has achieved a back-to-back title run. For a team that thrives under pressure, the Panthers are looking every bit the champions they are. As they head to the state tournament, one thing is clear: this team knows how to finish strong.
