Shane Van Gisbergen celebrated his 37th birthday in style on Saturday, securing the pole position for the Go Bowling at The Glen at Watkins Glen International. The defending race champion is now perfectly positioned to chase his second consecutive NASCAR Cup Series victory at the iconic road course, and he did it with a lap that showcased both skill and strategy.
Van Gisbergen's top lap of 1 minute, 11.165 seconds (123.937 mph) earned him his fifth career Cup Series pole in 62 starts and his first of the 2026 season. Reflecting on his qualifying run, the New Zealand native admitted it wasn't perfect—but it was good enough. "I nailed it on my first lap, but the first half was pretty average," he said. "On my second lap, I had less tire grip, but it was a better lap overall. I think I was ahead until the Bus Stop and then messed it up. My first lap was really strong there, so I probably got it right while others got it wrong."
Van Gisbergen is still searching for his first win of 2026 after a breakout five-win season last year, which included a victory at this very track. He'll lead the field to green on Sunday afternoon alongside Michael McDowell, who qualified second with a lap of 1:11.424. Adding to the excitement, three of the top five qualifiers hail from Trackhouse Racing: Van Gisbergen in first, Ross Chastain in fourth, and Connor Zilisch in fifth. Zilisch, who won last year's O'Reilly Auto Parts Series race at Watkins Glen, is a name to watch. Austin Cindric rounded out the top three in the 38-driver field.
This year's Go Bowling at The Glen brings significant changes to a race that has been a NASCAR Cup Series staple since 1986. For the first time, the event moves to a spring date, and the race distance has been extended to 100 laps—10 more than previous years. (Outside of the 2024 event, all other Cup weekends at Watkins Glen have taken place in August.) NASCAR has also implemented stricter track limits to prevent drivers from running outside the racing surface, with tire packs now placed in Turn 1 and the Carousel (Outer Loop).
Van Gisbergen noted that the Carousel feels similar, but Turn 1 demands more precision. "You really have to be accurate there now," he said. With a birthday pole, a hungry team, and a track that suits his aggressive style, all eyes will be on SVG as he aims to turn that front-row start into another victory at The Glen. Whether you're cheering from the stands or watching from home, Sunday's race promises to be a thrilling start to spring.
