Shrewsbury Town defender Mal Benning will leave the League Two club when his contract runs out at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old left-back joined Salop from Port Vale in the summer of 2023 and signed a new two-year deal in 2024.

Benning has made 115 appearances for the club and is set to play his final home game against Fleetwood Town on Saturday (15:00 BST).

He has made 15 league appearances this season but has not been involved in the past four games.

"Since we walked through the door, you'll remember he was out in the cold - I've always been a very big fan of Mal's, he was an absolute class act," Town boss Gavin Cowan told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"Watching him in the stands, I always thought he carries himself really well and he's a real good role model for the football club.

"I had a really frank conversation with him about him being involved again, we managed to get him to his 50 appearances, and in doing that he's played a big part in us staying in the league."

Cowan said he hoped the Salop supporters would give Benning a good send-off against the Cod Army at Croud Meadow.

"I'd love the fans to come out and show their appreciation for not just this year but obviously the seasons he's been with us and some moments we've had with him."
