The Springfield Thunderbirds seized a 2-1 series lead in the Atlantic Division Semifinals of the 2026 Calder Cup Playoffs with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over the Providence Bruins. In a game that showcased the intensity of playoff hockey, the T-Birds rallied from an early deficit to secure the win in dramatic fashion.

The first period was a tale of two halves. Springfield struck first after a chaotic sequence in front of the Providence net. Chris Wagner's initial shot was denied by AHL All-Star goaltender Michael DiPietro, but the puck sat loose in the crease, and defenseman Calle Rosen pounced to poke it home for a 1-0 lead. However, the Bruins responded with a vengeance. Matthew Poitras tied the game with just 2:41 left in the frame, and then a power-play goal with only 4.7 seconds remaining gave Providence a 2-1 advantage heading into the intermission.

Springfield came out firing in the second period. Rosen struck again early, unleashing a laser from the left faceoff circle to level the game at 2-2. The period remained tightly contested, with the T-Birds holding a slim 11-8 edge in shots. Both teams went 0-for-1 on the power play, setting the stage for a tense final frame.

The third period saw Springfield dominate territorially, outshooting Providence 10-4 in the first 10 minutes despite killing off a penalty. The Bruins managed five of their eight shots in the latter half of the period, but neither team could find the back of the net, sending the game to overtime.

The hero emerged just four minutes into the extra session. Springfield forward Zach Dean fired a shot that deflected off teammate Otto Stenberg's skate and into the Providence net. After a brief video review, officials confirmed Stenberg did not kick the puck, and the goal stood, giving the T-Birds a hard-fought 3-2 victory.

Springfield goaltender Georgi Romanov was outstanding, stopping 33 of 35 shots for a .943 save percentage. At the other end, DiPietro made 31 saves on 34 shots for a .912 mark. The series now shifts as the Thunderbirds look to build on this momentum and take a commanding lead.
