Manchester United have been dealt a significant blow as centre-back Matthijs de Ligt undergoes surgery to resolve a persistent back injury, ruling him out until the early stages of the 2026/27 season.

The Dutch international, who has been sidelined since November, went under the knife after conservative rehabilitation methods failed to address the issue. The club confirmed the operation on Friday, describing it as a success but acknowledging the problem was far more serious than initially believed.

De Ligt's absence marks a frustrating chapter for both player and club. The 26-year-old had been one of United's most consistent performers before the injury, having played every minute of every Premier League match until late November. His last appearance came against Crystal Palace, and despite early optimism from former head coach Ruben Amorim and interim boss Michael Carrick—who suggested De Ligt had returned to grass training—the injury ultimately required surgical intervention.

"Since November, I have done everything, pushing myself in every session and exploring every option, to get back to doing what I love, playing football," De Ligt said in a club statement. "But this was the necessary step."

The timing could not be worse for United. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, De Ligt will miss the tournament entirely, and his return will not come until the Red Devils are well into their Champions League campaign next season.

This development raises pressing questions about United's defensive depth. While Harry Maguire recently signed a new deal, the club still boasts Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, and Luke Shaw—who can also slot into the backline. However, with Champions League football on the schedule, adding another name to the roster may become a priority for the transfer market.

For now, United fans will hope De Ligt returns fitter and stronger, ready to reclaim his place as a cornerstone of the defence. Until then, the club must navigate a demanding season without one of their most reliable performers.
