For the second time in three years, the Daytona State Falcons have proven that greatness is a habit worth celebrating. On May 14, the team captured its 12th NJCAA women's golf national championship, and they did it in dramatic, one-stroke fashion.
The four-day tournament at Oakwood Country Club in Coal Valley, Illinois, came down to the wire. After Thursday's final round, the Falcons rallied from a two-shot deficit against Odessa to claim the title. While the Wranglers led after the third day, Daytona State saved its best performance for last, firing a collective 13-over-par to finish the tournament at +69. Odessa settled for second at +70. No other team came within 45 strokes of the top.
Odessa's Napajira Luesattha took home the individual national title for the second consecutive year, but the Falcons showcased their depth with a dominating team effort. Freshman Alana Kutt led the charge, finishing second individually at 10-over-par. Fellow freshman Jamie Lowry secured third place at 12-over. Daytona State was the only team with two golfers in the top six, and it placed three others inside the top 21.
Sophomores also stepped up: Cambree Hodge tied for 13th at 27-over-par, Kalia Polete finished 17th at 28-over, and Emma Wells rounded out the squad in 21st at 31-over.
Behind it all is head coach Laura Brown, the only coach the powerhouse program has ever known. In her 28 seasons, Brown has averaged a national championship nearly every other year, bringing the total to 12 titles. Her leadership continues to set the standard for NJCAA women's golf.
