Oregon State ace pitcher Dax Whitney is done for the season. Here's how the Beavers plan to adapt to losing him in the rotation.

Oregon State baseball has been dealt a tough blow just as the postseason looms on the horizon. Ace pitcher Dax Whitney, one of the nation's elite starters, has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to an elbow injury. For a Beavers squad sitting at 36-11 and eyeing a deep playoff run, losing their top arm is a significant hurdle—but this team isn't backing down.

The good news? Oregon State's pitching staff is built on depth and confidence. "Our pitching staff is so deep. We're all so talented, and I think any one of us can take the ball on any given day and put our team in a position to win," said relief pitcher Isaac Yeager. That mindset will be crucial as the Beavers reshuffle their rotation.

Here's how the new lineup shapes up: left-hander Ethan Kleinschmit, typically the Saturday starter, steps into Whitney's role as the series opener. Eric Segura, the usual Sunday starter, slides into the Saturday slot. As for Sunday, that's still up in the air, according to head coach Mitch Canham. In their most recent outing on May 3, Trey Morris got the nod and delivered a strong performance, allowing just one run over five innings.

Other arms who have taken the mound this season—like Connor Mendez, Noah Scott, and Mason Pike—are expected to see increased innings as Canham and his staff find the right mix. Meanwhile, the bullpen will be called upon more heavily. Consistent relievers such as Yeager, Wyatt Queen, AJ Hutcheson, Zach Kmatz, Zach Edwards, and Tanner Douglas could all see their pitch counts rise in the weeks ahead. "It's just about keeping our team in it and passing it on to the next guy," Yeager added.

Through it all, Canham is focused on keeping his pitchers sharp and positive. "Some people can look at it as difficult, but we look at it as opportunity," he said. "All those hard things that happen in the world, you've got to look at it as opportunity." For Oregon State, this isn't just about filling a void—it's about proving that their depth can carry them through. And for fans, it's a reminder that in baseball, the next man up is always ready to deliver.
