The Cincinnati Bengals have made plenty of positive changes this offseason, but one lingering question about their defensive backfield just got a lot louder. For the first time since entering the NFL, first-round pick Dax Hill has spoken up about where he wants to line up—and the team would be wise to listen.

Drafted as a versatile defensive back, Hill has been shuffled from safety to slot corner to boundary corner and back again. It's been a whirlwind that, while showcasing his talent, has also stunted his development. Now, after years of quietly moving wherever the team needed him, Hill is taking a stand.

"Staying at one spot, I feel like that's ideal for development and my mental health… I want to be outside," Hill told reporters this week, per CLNS Media. "Once you feel like you're growing and producing, I feel like the sky's the limit… I want to make the most out of it."

That "outside" preference is key. Last season, Hill looked like a breakout star from Week 9 onward while playing boundary corner. If that trajectory continues, he and DJ Turner could form a dynamic duo at a premium position that most teams struggle to fill. But the Bengals have a history of moving him around—and their slot cornerback situation remains a glaring weakness.

Since Mike Hilton left, Cincinnati has cycled through options like Josh Newton, Ja'Sir Taylor, and Jalen Davis, none of whom have locked down the job. The team didn't exactly address the slot in free agency or the draft, leaving a hole that could tempt coaches to shift Hill back inside.

Hill's position preference, along with potential long-term extensions for both him and Turner, are two of the biggest hurdles the Bengals face this summer. While the franchise has shown a new aggression in building a winner, how they handle the cornerback room—both on the field and at the negotiating table—remains a storyline worth watching.

For now, Hill has made his voice heard. After years of putting the team first, it's time for the Bengals to put him in a position to succeed.
