The search for Manchester United's next permanent manager appears to be heating up, with a familiar face now leading the charge. According to a major update from The Athletic's David Ornstein, interim boss Michael Carrick has surged into pole position for the coveted role at Old Trafford.

Ornstein suggests the managerial landscape might look different if elite, available coaches like Thomas Tuchel or Carlo Ancelotti were on the market. However, Tuchel is now committed to the England national team through the 2026 World Cup, Ancelotti is leading Brazil, and Luis Enrique is poised to stay at Paris Saint-Germain.

This has shifted the focus, and while names like Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner have been linked, it's Carrick—the man already in the dugout—who currently holds the inside track. Appointed on an interim basis in January following Ruben Amorim's dismissal, Carrick was tasked with a clear mission: secure Champions League football.

He has delivered emphatically so far, revitalizing the squad and steering United to third in the Premier League table. With a seven-point cushion over sixth-placed Chelsea, the Red Devils are firmly on course for a top-four finish, which would massively strengthen Carrick's case for the permanent job.

The quest isn't over yet, however. A surprising 2-1 loss to Leeds United served as a recent reminder of the league's unpredictability. This weekend's clash away at Chelsea now takes on monumental importance. A defeat at Stamford Bridge would see their lead over the Blues shrink to a precarious four points, adding late drama to the season's final stretch and potentially testing the resolve of the United hierarchy.
