David Malukas is knocking on the door of his first IndyCar Series victory, and after a stellar performance at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, that breakthrough feels closer than ever.

The 24-year-old Chicago native, now driving for Team Penske, delivered his best result of the season with a runner-up finish in the Sonsio Grand Prix. Starting from fifth on the grid, Malukas surged to the front thanks to a mix of sharp strategy and opportunistic driving, leading a race-high 27 of 85 laps. For a moment, it looked like he might secure that elusive win.

But Arrow McLaren's Christian Lundgaard had other plans. On Lap 68, Lundgaard executed a daring outside pass through Turn 2, completing the move at the exit of Turn 4. From there, he pulled away, crossing the finish line 4.613 seconds ahead of Malukas. Still, the result marks Malukas's second podium of the year and his highest finish through six races—a clear sign of progress for Team Penske's newest driver.

"We keep getting close," Malukas admitted. "Look, that race was honestly very fortunate. We were having so much luck."

He didn't shy away from acknowledging the role of circumstance. The opening lap saw a Turn 1 incident where Felix Rosenqvist made contact with front-row starter Pato O'Ward, taking out several contenders. Later, Kyle Kirkwood ran into trouble during a pit cycle, further clearing Malukas's path. "You have the start, which took out a lot of fast guys," he explained. "Then lap cars got out of the way, and we actually got some clean air, which we so desperately needed with the way our setup was. Everything was just so fortunate. I said, 'Wow, the IMS gods, they're with me.' They gave me all this luck."

But when it came to the final stretch, Malukas knew he was up against a faster car. "Lundgaard was just so fast. I was trying everything I could—sideways pretty much 50% of those laps. He was still just pulling, pulling."

Given that Malukas had finished no better than 12th in previous races and had two results outside the top 20, this runner-up finish exceeded his own expectations. For a driver still finding his rhythm with a new team, it's a powerful statement—and a sign that a first win may be just around the corner.
