Another box checked. Another sign that things are truly different in Miami.
The new Dolphins regime is stacking up wins off the field, and De'Von Achane's contract extension is the latest proof. In a refreshing departure from the previous decade's chaotic approach to player contracts, the message is finally clear: the best, most productive players of the right age will get paid what they deserve.
It might seem simple to frame Achane's four-year, $64 million deal in such basic terms. But sometimes, the simplest concepts are the most revolutionary. The new Dolphins way is about fundamentals—size on the lines, production in the draft, accountability in meetings, and practicing outside in the South Florida heat because that's where games are actually played.
Before this team can win consistently on the field, they needed to get their house in order off it. And that starts with rewarding the right people.
At 24 years old, with a league-leading 5.7-yard rushing average and appearing in 33 of the last 35 games, Achane was the obvious choice for the next big deal. He's the home-run threat that new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan inherited and immediately identified as a priority.
"A priority," Sullivan said, almost from the moment he arrived in South Florida.
Getting this deal done is another early step in the right direction—a sign that professional standards are returning to the Dolphins organization. But let's keep it in perspective. This is just a step, like applauding someone for getting their driver's license. It's what should happen.
For years, the Dolphins mishandled the predictable, inevitable negotiations with players approaching the end of their rookie contracts. Remember Christian Wilkins? Robert Hunt? Brandon Jones? Andrew Van Ginkel? The list goes on. Poor drafts were compounded by fumbling negotiations with the few good picks they actually made, letting them walk to free agency.
On the flip side, there was excessive spending on the wrong players—Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Ramsey, Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb. The contrast couldn't be starker.
Now, the Dolphins are finally paying the right people at the right time. Achane's extension isn't just a contract—it's a statement about where this franchise is headed.
