Sometimes in Major League Baseball, there isn't much more to say other than teams not doing what's needed on both sides of the baseball. The harsh reality of this game is that it's very difficult, and if a squad isn't ready to play every single day, it typically won't end well for anybody involved.
That's currently the problem for the Philadelphia Phillies, and more importantly, head coach Rob Thomson. Thomson, viewed as someone who is well respected in Major League Baseball, finds himself somewhat in the hot seat, at least according to most.
However, when recently speaking about the entire situation, I liked that Dave Dombrowski came out and actually somewhat backed him. Instead of blaming everything on Thomson, he insisted that this team just isn't playing that well.
If anything, this is more of Dombrowski admitting that he didn't do a good enough job than blaming everything on Thomson at the moment.
“We just haven’t played very well. It’s really every portion of our game,” the Phillies’ president of baseball operations said, per ESPN. “There’s been some individual players that have done fine, by all means, who are doing well. As a group, I don’t think any part of our team has excelled: Offensively, pitching-wise, starting pitching-wise, defensively.”
“There’s no sense of worrying about things you can’t control,” Dombrowski said. “I’ve learned that a long time ago, so I don’t really fret when that type of stuff happens. You get frustrated, but the way you go about it is, well, the next day you got to go do it again, and eventually they end up falling in. And there’s going to be bloopers that fall in and dribblers that come in for us, at some time here. You hope it’s sooner rather than later.”
There's always a mixture of what is actually the problem. The Phillies, unfortunately, have a lot of them, and it doesn't look like that can all be changed in a year. If anything, it might be better to move on from this current core and go from there. Regardless, something obviously needs to change.
