Darwin Núñez has reportedly agreed to leave Al-Hilal this summer, just months after his high-profile move from Liverpool. The Uruguayan striker's time in Saudi Arabia has been anything but smooth, with a bombshell agreement now in place for a fresh start.

Núñez joined Al-Hilal for over £40 million last summer, ending a rollercoaster spell at Anfield where he showed flashes of brilliance but struggled for consistency. The Saudi club had pursued him since January of the previous year, making his arrival one of the most anticipated transfers of the window.

However, the move has turned into a nightmare. Despite decent numbers when he's played—six goals and four assists in 16 appearances this season—Al-Hilal made the shocking decision to replace him with Karim Benzema just months into his contract. Under foreign-player quota rules, Núñez was removed from the domestic squad in February, limiting his action to the AFC Champions League, where he recently scored twice against Al Wahda.

This exile has put Núñez's 2026 World Cup hopes in serious jeopardy. The 26-year-old hasn't scored for Uruguay in 13 appearances, a drought stretching back to June 2024. Manager Marcelo Bielsa is reportedly hesitant to start him, with local media suggesting Núñez has fallen to third-choice behind younger attacking options.

According to El Observador, Núñez has now reached an agreement to leave Al-Hilal for a new destination. A return to Liverpool seems unlikely, but fans might see him lining up against their former hero very soon. Wherever he lands, this is a player desperate to reignite his career and prove the doubters wrong.
