Nova Nation, get ready—because the Villanova Wildcats just added some serious firepower to their backcourt. Darryl “Buddy” Simmons II has officially signed with the program, and the excitement is already building.
Standing at just 5’11”, Simmons II might not be the tallest player on the court, but his scoring ability is anything but small. The senior guard joins Villanova after a standout junior season at St. Bonaventure, where he averaged an impressive 16.4 points per game. What really sets him apart? His deadly three-point shooting. Simmons II knocked down 42.5% of his attempts from beyond the arc, connecting on 2.8 triples per contest—numbers that should fit perfectly into Villanova’s offensive system.
Head coach Kevin Willard didn’t hold back his enthusiasm. “Buddy is an experienced college guard who can score at all three levels,” Willard said. “His ability to stretch the defense as a 3-point threat will make an immediate impact on our team. We’re excited to welcome another gifted guard to Villanova.”
Simmons II proved he can hang with elite competition. In a 22-point performance against North Carolina during the Fort Myers Tip-Off, he shot 9-of-16 from the floor and 4-of-6 from three, committing just two turnovers in 36 minutes. That kind of efficiency against a powerhouse program shows he’s ready for the bright lights of the Big East.
Last season with the Bonnies, Simmons II scored 20 or more points in 11 games, showcasing his ability to catch fire at any moment. While his size might occasionally limit his minutes against bigger guards, his scoring instincts and range make him a valuable asset off the bench or as a starter.
With Simmons II officially on board, only Nico Onyekwere remains unannounced among the Wildcats’ returning players. It’s shaping up to be an exciting season in Villanova—and if you’re looking to gear up like the new guard, now’s the time to stock up on Wildcats apparel.
