Darren Fletcher criticises FA as Youth Cup final becomes a ‘Man City parade’

Darren Fletcher has criticised the Football Association for allowing the FA Youth Cup final to become a “Manchester City parade” and told the governing body to take ownership of its flagship junior competition.

Darren Fletcher has taken a strong stance against the Football Association, accusing them of letting the FA Youth Cup final turn into a "Manchester City parade." The Manchester United Under-18s coach is calling on the governing body to reclaim ownership of its flagship junior competition after Thursday night's match at the Joie Stadium.

City's Under-18s edged out their United counterparts 2-1, with a late winner from Reigan Heskey—son of former Liverpool and England striker Emile Heskey—sealing the victory. But what really got under Fletcher's skin wasn't the result, but the atmosphere surrounding the trophy presentation. As his dejected squad stood watching, each City coach and player had their name loudly announced over the PA system while collecting their medals—a level of individual recognition Fletcher believes has no place in a Cup final.

The former Manchester United and Scotland midfielder was visibly frustrated, marching over to FA officials during the post-match ceremonies to voice his concerns. He also expressed disappointment that the final wasn't held at a larger venue. The Etihad Stadium was unavailable due to construction work on its expanded North Stand, and City reportedly turned down an FA request to move the match to Old Trafford.

"Not only to watch a team lift a trophy, but to be a Man City parade when it's an FA Youth Cup final," Fletcher said, reflecting on the tough lesson for his players. "I've never heard individual coaches be shouted out, every individual player be shouted out. That doesn't happen in Cup finals. So I'm disappointed in the FA for everything that's gone around this game, for the location, for everything."

Fletcher acknowledged that his team had to show respect to the opposition, but he drew the line at what he saw as City taking over an FA competition. "It's an FA competition. It should never have been like that," he added. "But that's my one gripe for tonight. The best team won, compliments to them."

City declined to comment on Fletcher's complaints, though insiders suggest officials reacted with some amusement—particularly given that the Scot had sent his team out to compete hard in a fiercely contested derby. For young players on both sides, the FA Youth Cup remains a vital stepping stone in their development, but the debate over its staging and presentation is now firmly in the spotlight.
