Darian Mensah is generating serious buzz, but the hype train might be speeding past what he can realistically deliver.
During the 2025 college football season, the former Duke quarterback showed flashes of brilliance, leading the Blue Devils to their first outright ACC championship since 1962 and a second consecutive nine-win season. With 3,973 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and just six interceptions, Mensah looked poised to return for his junior year and help head coach Manny Diaz elevate the program even higher.
Instead, in a move that shocked the college football world, Mensah entered the transfer portal at the last minute and joined national runner-up and ACC rival Miami. He even took wide receiver Cooper Barkate with him, adding extra sting to the departure. Now wearing Hurricanes colors, the expectations for the 6-foot-3 signal-caller have reached a fever pitch.
According to On3's J.D. PicKell, Mensah ranks among the top three quarterbacks in college football for next season, alongside Ole Miss's Trinidad Chambliss and Oregon's Dante Moore. PicKell praised Mensah's composure and skill set, saying, "He doesn't bail out of the pocket too quickly. Can create pretty well with his legs. Pretty release. Really crafty and savvy."
Those are lofty accolades for a player who, just two years ago, was battling for the starting job at Tulane. While Mensah's talent is undeniable, the pressure of living up to top-tier quarterback status in a high-stakes program like Miami may prove to be a challenge too steep for even the most promising young arm.
