The crack of the bat and the cheer of the crowd return this Saturday as the Danville Area Little League celebrates its official season opening! While a handful of early games have already taken place to meet scheduling requirements for certain divisions, the ceremonial first pitch marks the true community kickoff.
The festivities begin at 10 a.m. inside the Danville High School gymnasium, promising a full day of baseball and softball action. This year, a fantastic 345 local kids, ranging in age from 4 to 16, are signed up to play across various skill levels, from T-Ball for the littlest sluggers to more advanced divisions for seasoned players.
"The number of players has increased each year, which is fantastic," said Little League Board Director Kelly Beltz. "Our goal is to get these kids outside, having fun, and hopefully falling in love with the game."
The day starts with a beloved parade where the young athletes get to be the center of attention. The league will also recognize past players and hand out awards for exceptional performances from the previous season. After the hour-long ceremony, it's time to play ball across the league's two excellent complexes: the Washie complex with its four fields and the Echo Field complex by the river.
These top-notch facilities, maintained by dedicated volunteers, feature bullpens and batting cages. And for fans in the stands, the concession stand at the Washies, run by Melissa Lopez, has been upgraded with new menu items like funnel cake fries and chicken fries to fuel the excitement.
The season runs through Memorial Day, marking months of community, competition, and the pure joy of the game. It's a great reminder of why we love sports—the teamwork, the dedication, and the memories being made right here in Danville.
