Daniil Medvedev failed to win a single game in his one-sided loss to Matteo Berrettini at the Monte Carlo Masters. It was the first time in his career he’s lost 6-0, 6-0, making it easily his worst performance since switching coaches last year.

Daniil Medvedev's 2024 Monte Carlo Masters campaign ended in the most brutal fashion imaginable: a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Matteo Berrettini. The former world number one failed to win a single game, marking the first double-bagel loss of his professional career and his most concerning performance since his coaching change last year.

The statistics were stark. Medvedev landed a mere 36% of his first serves, a crippling number for any player, let alone one of his caliber. Speaking to 'Bolshe' after the match, Medvedev was candid about his complete lack of rhythm. "I just couldn’t get a hold of anything, or even get a serve in," he admitted. "I served well in practice, so it’s unclear what happened."

When asked about tactical adjustments during the blowout, Medvedev's response highlighted the depth of his struggle. "It was tough to try anything because, in principle, I probably didn’t hit more than two balls into play," he said. "You can play aggressively or defensively, but if you’re not putting balls in the court at all then no matter how you play, it won’t help."

This result painfully underscores Medvedev's long-standing, well-documented battle with clay. While a champion on hard courts, his game has rarely found its footing on the slower, more demanding red dirt. His lone clay-court title remains his 2023 triumph in Rome, a stark contrast to his dominance elsewhere.

Faced with such a comprehensive defeat, Medvedev's post-match reflection took a philosophical turn. He questioned whether over-analyzing a 6-0, 6-0 loss was even productive. "It’s one thing when you lose 6-3 6-3 and try to understand what could have been done better," he noted. "But when you lose by such a score, then you could have done everything better." For now, it seems the Russian star is choosing to simply move on from a day in Monte Carlo he will desperately want to forget.
