When you're the face of the world's most explosive combat sports organization, you'd think a little power might shield you from the fallout. But for UFC President Dana White, that assumption proved painfully wrong. In a candid new interview, White is opening up about the 2023 New Year's Eve altercation with his wife, Anne, that sent shockwaves through the sports world—and his family.
The incident, which took place at a nightclub in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, was captured on video and quickly went viral. The footage showed White and his wife exchanging slaps during a heated argument, sparking widespread controversy and calls for accountability. Now, White is addressing the aftermath head-on, revealing that even his position as the head of the UFC didn't offer any protection from the consequences.
"You don't recover from those," White admitted during a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club. "Those are ones you don't recover from." When pressed by host Charlamagne Tha God about whether his status as boss insulated him from harsher repercussions, White didn't shy away. He acknowledged that while a board of directors and other decision-makers could have pushed for his removal, they ultimately believed his departure would have hurt the company even more.
"There's a board of directors… there's other people involved that could have pushed for that," White explained. "They think, too, it would've hurt the company more if I did step away."
White also defended his approach to discipline within the UFC, framing it as more lenient than what you'd find in other professional sports leagues. "I'm in the fight business," he said. "It's not like I run Microsoft." But the real weight of the incident, he says, was felt at home. The fallout hit his family hard, especially his children. "My older son didn't talk to us for like four days [after it happened]," White revealed. "The first thing that her and I did was handle the situation with the kids."
For a man who's built a career on high-stakes battles inside the Octagon, this personal fight may be the toughest one yet. And as the sports world watches, White's message is clear: no title, no position, no amount of power can shield you from the consequences of your actions—especially when family is on the line.
