The UConn Huskies have officially kicked off their offseason with a significant addition, securing a commitment from Seton Hall transfer forward Najai Hines. This marks the first major portal move for head coach Dan Hurley as he begins the crucial task of retooling the roster following another championship season.
Hines, a 6-foot-10 big man from Plainfield, N.J., arrives in Storrs with three seasons of eligibility remaining. He fills an immediate need in the frontcourt after the departures of Tarris Reed Jr. and Eric Reibe. As a freshman for the Pirates, Hines showed promising flashes, averaging 6.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and an impressive 2.2 blocks in just 18 minutes per game while shooting an efficient 60% from the field.
His potential was on full display against the Huskies themselves last season. In a narrow Seton Hall loss on UConn's senior day, Hines posted a double-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks. He also performed well in the earlier matchup, contributing 10 points, seven boards, and three blocks. Ranked as the 27th-best player and the sixth-best big man in the transfer portal by 247Sports, Hines brings a known commodity from within the Big East, a league renowned for its physical play.
While his offensive game is still developing, Hines will immediately bolster UConn's interior defense and rebounding. He has the potential to grow into one of the nation's premier rim protectors and defenders under Hurley's guidance. However, the Huskies' work in the portal is far from over. The program is actively pursuing additional frontcourt help to supplement Hines, with several high-profile targets reportedly on their radar as Hurley continues to shape his roster for the title defense ahead.
