Winning comes at a price, and UConn coach Dan Hurley revealed what that looks like these days in men's college basketball.

Winning in college basketball has never been cheap, but UConn head coach Dan Hurley is putting a specific price tag on championship aspirations. In a recent appearance on The Field of 68 podcast, the two-time national champion coach revealed the financial reality for programs aiming to compete at the highest level.

"Staffs don't want to look like we're paying the max. But you've got to be spending, I'd imagine, somewhere north of $14 million if you want to be in contention to compete at the top of the big league or to try to play deep into the tournament," Hurley said.

That $14 million figure isn't pulled from thin air. Hurley explained that agents—both domestic and international—have become deeply embedded in the college basketball ecosystem, providing clear market valuations for players based on roles and production. "Anyone that says they're getting these big discounts on these premium players just because they want to go play at their school," he added, "that's just not the reality anymore."

The conversation around NIL budgets has dominated the college basketball offseason, with coaches across the country offering glimpses into the financial arms race reshaping the sport. For programs dreaming of Final Four runs, the price of admission is steep—and rising.

But Hurley did offer a glimmer of hope for schools looking to stretch their dollars. "Retention—you're always going to get players. If you run a good program and you're doing things the right way, you're going to get a hometown discount on your retention guys," he noted.

In other words, building a winning culture and treating players right can still save programs millions. But for those looking to reload through the transfer portal? Be prepared to open the checkbook.
