Daily Bean: Draft Lottery Day, NHL Second Round, John Chayka Introduced to Toronto

It's Draft Lottery Day, and believe it or not, the Boston Bruins have a shot at landing a top-seven pick in this year's draft. Yes, they made the playoffs, but thanks to a trade with the Maple Leafs—who didn't—Boston could score another high-value selection.

In other Bruins news, head coach Marco Sturm isn't ready to name a captain just yet. He says he needs to talk things over with GM Don Sweeney first, noting that last season went "real well" without a 'C' on anyone's chest. We'll hear more from Sweeney, Cam Neely, and Charlie Jacobs on Wednesday.

Over on the ice, two playoff games went down last night, both featuring teams rocking orange—and neither came out on top. The Hurricanes grabbed a 2-0 series lead, while the Golden Knights skated to a Game 1 win.

Around the league, John Chayka was officially introduced to the Toronto media, and Mats Sundin made a return to the city. MLSE CEO Keith Pelley was also on hand, fielding some tough questions about the hiring process. Meanwhile, the NHL announced the three finalists for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Here's your Daily Bean roundup of the latest Bruins and league headlines:

Captain Question: At breakup day on Sunday, Sturm didn't commit to naming a captain, saying more chats with Sweeney are needed. He also pointed out that not having a 'C' last season went "real well."

Draft Lottery: The NHL Draft Lottery happens today. The Bruins have a 58.2% chance of picking either sixth overall (44.0%) or seventh overall (14.2%). If the Maple Leafs win or hold their spot, Boston's pick rolls over to 2027 or 2028. The lottery follows last year's live-draw format.

McAvoy's Hearing: Charlie McAvoy has an in-person hearing scheduled for Monday, May 11, at the NHL office in New York City. The Boston defenseman is facing discipline for a slashing incident against Buffalo.
