Dabo Swinney and Clemson are figuring out how to survive in the NIL era.

In the ever-evolving landscape of college athletics, where Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals have reshaped recruiting and roster management, Dabo Swinney and Clemson football are taking a road less traveled. While many programs scramble to secure deep-pocketed collectives and splashy transfer portal acquisitions, Swinney has proudly labeled his Tigers a "developmental program"—and he's sticking to that identity.

"Our process is different. But that's why we lead the nation in retention. Our process is proven," Swinney explained on Greg McElroy's Always College Football podcast. "We have a culture, and I think it's incredible. We're a developmental program. Now, the world has changed. There are 105 scholarships now… we've signed 16 portal guys in six years. But you have to use it now. That's not a source for us, but it's a resource."

That stat—just 16 transfer portal additions in six years—is striking in an era when some programs overhaul their rosters annually. For Swinney, the portal isn't a primary pipeline; it's a rare tool for targeted needs. Instead, Clemson leans heavily on building from within, fostering continuity, and developing high school recruits into NFL-caliber talent over multiple seasons.

Swinney remains steadfast in his belief that culture trumps cash. "I'm not willing to compromise or sacrifice having a strong culture and getting away from what's always won here," he said. "That purpose and everyone being aligned with a purpose—there's an alignment here. And again, there's a price. There's a transaction that has to happen, but if you get alignment right with the people who fit your purpose, who fit the people, who fit the place, who are passionate and really value what you value within your program, all that other stuff will work out and make sense."

For fans and athletes who value long-term growth over quick fixes, Clemson's approach is a refreshing throwback—and a reminder that in the NIL era, there's more than one way to build a championship culture. Whether you're a Tiger in training or just love the game, it's a philosophy worth getting behind.
